A key characteristic of clothing trends within the modern indie culture is a focus on fashions associated with the rockabilly scene of the 1950s; the psychedelia, folk, garage rock, underground and mod cultures of the 1960s; the punk, funk, country rock and freak scenes of the 1970s; the new wave, rave and college rockgrunge, brit pop, alternative rock and electronica cultures of the 1980s, and the scenes of the 1990s.

Common clothing items include T-shirts, vintage clothing, striped tops, dark rimmed glasses, blazers, distressed jeans, waistcoats, neckties, cardigan sweatersscarves. Some of the most popular footwear choices include Chuck Taylor All-Stars or other plimsoll shoes, slip-on shoes of all manners, ballet pumps, flip-flops and various styles of dress shoes. Other items that are a favorite in the indie culture include: drain-pipe jeans, body piercings, short cut-off jean shortsshorts, and high waisted jeans. Another kind of indie fashion in the United Kingdom (mostly among males) is to wear items of clothing that usually the other sex would wear. This was made popular by Suede frontman Brett Anderson. Indie fashion also features a wide variety of hairstyles, ranging from very stylized and shaped haircuts to hair that is intended to appear as though very little effort has gone into its arrangement.

Brand labels are sometimes rejected as an exemplification of mainstream culture, and several small companies cater to the indie style, including Tourist Attraction and Artus. American Apparel, however, has broken this mould and is one of the few brand labels that is accepted amongst the indie culture. Stores popular amont the indie culture include Urban Outfitters, Topshop, Topman, Miss Selfridge and H&M.
